Can I have a paypal account without a bank credit card?

I do work online and get paid sometimes, I want my payments to go to a paypal account so I can use that money to shop online. Is this possible? Can you tell me how paypal works if one does not give her credit and bank details? Can I withdraw money from it if I set up an account without bank details?
